Jump Start Your Business in 2015

At the SBA, we're all about jumpstarting and elevating America's small businesses. We want to see you make your small business Smarter, Bolder and More Accessible.  Collaboration with SBA resource partners is essential to our mission of helping small businesses, the engines of our economy, start and grow. This is something that is important to me, so I have created some helpful tips to help you kick-start your small business in 2015.

Tip # 1:  Don't Do it Alone:  Never be afraid to ask for help- no matter how long you have been in business or if you are just getting up and running. SBA resource partners provide quality one-on-one counseling, training and mentorship that can help to unleash your small business potential. In fiscal year 2014, these efforts helped small businesses get more than $4.7 billion in capital infusion, start over 13,500 new companies, and create and retain more than 70,000 jobs.

There are a handful of SBA resource partners that can cater to your small business needs or concerns. Our resource partners include SCORE, Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) and Women Business Centers (WBC). In addition, 15 organizations serve as Veterans Business Outreach Centers through cooperative agreements with SBA's Office of Veterans Business Development. Overall, SBA's resource partners make small businesses a big deal with large impact. Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) counseled and trained 485,487 clients, SCORE, For the Life of Your Business, counseled and trained nearly 442,000 clients, and Women's Business Centers (WBCs) provided assistance to 140,037 clients.

Tip # 2:  Think Globally:  Opportunities across the globe can be one key stroke away.  When you start or grow your business, please remember your customer can come from anywhere in the world.  The SBA can assist you to think globally in the way you market your product or service, or if you would like to export your goods or service and we can assist you in bringing in a number one global client:  the federal government.  All of these resources are located under one umbrella for you at the SBA- help us to help you utilize the tools we have created for you to reach the global market.

Tip # 3:  Put Your Ego Aside:  Make 2015 the year you establish the solid relationship with a lender- even if you aren't ready to borrow capital at this time.  You will have that relationship in place when you are in need of capital for your business and that relationship can become critical for jumpstarting or expanding your business.  Your local SBA office can provide you a list of current SBA guaranteed lenders.

Establish a relationship with your competition.  You never know when you can collaborate with a competitor to take on a contract larger than your capacity can handle alone.  Learn from each other, put your egos to the side, and use each other as references.  Your competition should be your closest client.  And lastly, network.  It seems so simple, but just by showing up and making one new business relationship in person can create a deal of a lifetime.  Google Hangouts are great and provide a very helpful learning environment, but there is nothing quite like meeting someone in person, shaking hands, and making that personal connection.

I hope you find these tips helpful while you create your New Year's resolutions for your small business.  Thank you for everything you do as a small business owner every day.  Our communities, our relationships, and our economy depend on you and your small business passion.  Continue to be inspired and please remember that we are here to assist you every step of the way. I wish you a Happy Holidays and  Happy New Year!!!!

The NFDO and Edward Waters College (EWC) in Jacksonville, Florida recently hosted a series of courses for people interested in starting their own business. Over 100 people participated in the 7-week course, which concluded with a graduation ceremony on November 25. The classes focused on finance, business planning, marketing strategies, and identifying resources. Last year the SBA signed a Strategic Alliance Memorandum (SAM) with EWC as part of a regional effort to partner with historically black colleges and universities. These partnerships were designed to help reach underserved communities, as well as students.

The NFDO recently signed a SAM with the African American of Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida (AACCCF) in an effort to extend its programs and services throughout the Central Florida region. Cassius Butts, SBA Region IV Administrator and Vernice Atkins-Bradley, AACCCF Board Chair signed the SAM as part of the Urban Entrepreneur Roundtable hosted at Orlando City Hall on November 20, 2014.

The district was excited to learn of its selection to host two Emerging Leaders classes next year.  The inaugural class graduated 13 business leaders out of the original 15 that registered.  In addition to re-hosting an event in partnership with the Small Business Development Center at Florida International University (FIU) in downtown Miami, the district will convene a class in Tampa, Fla.  SBA South Florida District is one of only two districts chosen to host two classes.

With the coming of the holidays, comes the spirit of giving.  SBA South Florida District will finalize its Combined Federal Campaign  drive before the holidays and all signs appear that we will exceed our goal.  Warm holiday greetings from everyone in the South Florida District!

Small Business Saturday Event in Kentucky

The SBA Kentucky District Office and the Louisville Independent Business Alliance (LIBA), the "Keep Louisville Weird" folks, held a Small Business Saturday event on November 29th at the original location of Feeders Supply near downtown Louisville. Joining District Director Ralph Ross at the event were Congressman John Yarmuth and Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer, along with LIBA Director Jennifer Rubenstein. All discussed the importance of small businesses to the economy and local communities.

Feeders Supply was founded in 1959 as a feed store serving area livestock farms in the region, but the company has evolved into the premier retailer of pet foods and supplies in seven counties surrounding Louisville. Known as "the pet lover's store," the company offers over 10,000 items for small animals, pet birds and reptiles.

This second generation business now has 14 locations and over 250 employees. The company donates floor space in our stores to area adoption agencies and rescue groups and supports local animal charities financially through sponsorships and donations.

To locate and support independent small businesses throughout the year, go to www.sba.gov/local.  To find out more about SBA programs and small business successes in Kentucky, go to www.sba.gov/ky, or call 502-582-5971.

Join Me As We Shop At America's Small Businesses

This Upcoming Saturday, November 29, 2014

Dear Friend—

Join me November 29th for Small Business Saturday, an opportunity to support and celebrate your neighborhood retailers and restaurants. More than two out of three Americans are now aware that Small Business Saturday is a day devoted to shopping and dining small. That's why I'm inviting you to share in this special occasion to amplify the lifeblood of our economy. Now in its fifth year, Small Business Saturday has become a critical day on the calendar for entrepreneurs to grow their customer base.

This year, we'll harness the power of social media to highlight the exemplary small businesses that make up our communities. Half of all holiday sales are now influenced by digital interactions. In 2013, two out of three shoppers purchased a gift found on social media. From the local clothing boutique with trendy fashion, to the book store that offers your favorite author, these businesses thrive when we bring business through their front doors.

Along with an exciting day of shopping, I encourage you to #DineSmall this "Small Business Saturday Night". This year, SBA is partnering with the National Restaurant Association to promote our local restaurants. Eating out on Small Business Saturday will emphasize the accomplishments of small business restaurants across the country while encouraging consumers to patronize eateries in their neighborhoods. Nine out of 10 restaurants have less than 50 employees, and 80 percent of restaurant owners start their careers in entry-level positions. That's why this movement is an important new way to support our hard working food proprietors who give America's Main Street the tastes we love.  The partnership will amplify restaurants during the national push to support our nation's small businesses on the busiest shopping weekend of the year.

SBA is a voice for small businesses and advocates on behalf of the more than 28 million small businesses.  Make sure you let us know what you are doing, via social media, using #SmallBizSat, #ShopSmall, and #DineSmall.

Sincerely,

Maria Contreras-Sweet
SBA Administrator

PS- To grow momentum this year, I’m inviting restaurants to promote #DineSmall by sharing their special menus for Small Business Saturday Night. Owners and chefs are invited to share their menus on social media using the #ShowUsYourMenu tag. It’s a great way to promote what your restaurant is doing to cater to America’s small shoppers.

Are You Ready For Small Business Saturday November 29th? Let's Shop and Dine Small!

As the voice for our nation's entrepreneurs, we at the SBA celebrate small businesses daily.  When our small businesses do well, our communities do well. Therefore, as part of our annual tradition, we are asking you to join millions of Americans and shop small on Small Business Saturday, November 29th, to complete your holiday shopping.

Small businesses represent the dynamic demographics of the United States, encompassing everyone from your family-owned small businesses to your neighborhood's recently opened specialty boutique or traditional manufacturer. Shopping small allows your community to advocate for your local small businesses that are adding jobs and diversity to your neighborhood's main street 365 days a year.

When we shop small, we're contributing to and saluting our unique local small businesses, elevating their small business potential. This is crucial as small businesses are engines to our economy, creating two out of every three net new private sector jobs. Last year, Small Business Saturday significantly empowered our small business owners. Consumers who were aware of Small Business Saturday spent an estimated $5.7 billion with independent merchants.

In addition to shopping, you can further participate in Small Business Saturday with these steps:

  • If you're a business owner, you can also make sure you're prepared for the holiday season by checking out SBA's advice at http://www.sba.gov/smallbusinesssaturday.
  •  If you're a customer rally your community to shop small and while you're at it, take part in Small Business Saturday® on social media using the hashtag #SmallBizSat to amplify your support for America's small businesses, the backbone of the U.S. economy.

I know I'll be shopping and dining at small businesses with my friends and family on Saturday, November 29th, so gather your neighbors and colleagues to shop small on Small Business Saturday.

The North Florida District signed a Strategic Alliance Memorandum (SAM) with Orange Couny Florida on November 6, 2014. Mayor Theresa Jacobs signed the SAM for the County and Wilfredo J. Gonzalez, North Florida District Director signed the SAM on behalf of Cassius Butts, SBA Region IV Administrator.

"We realize how vital it is for our economy, citizens and community to help small businesses achieve success," Mayor Jacobs said. "These entrepreneurs are what help make Orange County such a wonderful fruitful place to live and work. SBA does a fantastic job of helping provide the stepping stones for small businesses to flourish."

"It is a top priority for this Administration and the U.S. Small Business Administration to strategically align with our community partners and local governments to better serve our small business communities.  I am pleased beyond words to witness this historic strategic partnership between the SBA and Orange County.  I commend Mayor Teresa Jacobs for her commitment to small business and to the entrepreneurial opportunities she supports every day," says Cassius Butts, Regional Administrator, U.S. Small Business Administration.

SBA as a strategic partner of the U.S. Department of Transportation Bonding Education Program (BEP) works with surety-related organizations, as well as the designated prime contractors, to help small businesses become bond ready. Becoming bondable is a challenge for many small businesses, and the BEP program aims to help disadvantaged businesses grow by obtaining or building bonding capacity. SBA explained to participants how to go about to request a surety bond guarantee, the various programs for access to capital, business education and training thru in-house and external resource partners, as well as federal procurement opportunities and certification to qualified disadvantaged, women-owned and service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses.

The Interstate (I-4) expansion project, which is expected to be completed by 2020, will provide expanded lane capacity as well as toll-lanes between East Central Florida from Daytona Beach, all the way to Tampa. This expansion will require the State and local governments to provide operations and maintenance support for at least 20 years, so this project will exceed the current $2.3 Billion investment by several orders of magnitude.

SBA Lending to Mississippi Small

Businesses up in FY 2014

In Fiscal Year 2014, the SBA Mississippi District Office approved a total of 412 7(a) and 504 loans totaling $153.3 million.  "This surpasses the $138.8 million approved in fiscal year 2013 by more than $14.5 million (11%) and is extremely significant for small businesses in our state," says Janita R. Stewart, SBA Mississippi District Director.  "We play a vital role in enabling small businesses to get the capital they need to start and grow their businesses, create jobs and build communities."  Of the loans approved, 188 (46%) totaling almost $79.58 million were provided to new businesses and 224 (54%) totaling more than $73.7 million were to existing businesses.  A total of 3,321 jobs were created and retained as a result of these loans.

"This could not have happened without the participation of our various lending partners," Stewart said." The SBA Mississippi District Office had seventeen new lenders that participated during fiscal year 2014.The top five SBA lenders in terms of "largest number of loans approved" for FY 2014 included Community Bank of Mississippi; First Financial Bank; Covington County Bank; Trustmark National Bank and BancorpSouth.  The top five lenders in terms of "highest dollar volume of loans approved" are Community Bank; Live Oak Banking; First Financial Bank; BancorpSouth; and Peoples Bank.  Under the SBA's 504 Loan Program, the top Certified Development Company is Three Rivers Local Development Co., Inc. for "largest number of loans" and "highest dollar volume of loans".  The top Third Party Lender is Renasant Bank.

In FY 2014, almost 56% of the numbers of loans backed were to Underserved Markets.  The Underserved Markets includes a diverse mix of small businesses located in low-to-moderate income areas, HUBZones, rural areas, enterprise communities, empowerment zones, as well as businesses owned by veterans, minorities and women. "Access to capital is the key element for small businesses to grow and prosper," said Stewart.  "It helps keep Mississippi's economy strong.  SBA will continue to get capital into the hands of the small business community."

SBA South Carolina District Director

The South Carolina District Office is fortunate to have a couple of new faces: interns Kia Frazier and Cassius Moore, both of Benedict College--a historically black college in Columbia. The SBA's internship program with Benedict developed as part of the SBA-Benedict College Strategic Alliance Memorandum that was signed October 30, 2013, in order to better serve entrepreneurial needs both on and off campus.

"The internship program makes our alliance with Benedict tangible—It shows that our agreement is not just a piece of paper," said Gregg White, deputy district director of the South Carolina District Office.

Intern Cassius Moore is a junior majoring in accounting. During her time at SBA, she has interviewed several successful small business owners and written success stories about their experiences. Recently, she has been assisting the Lender Relations division.

"During my internship, I've learned what it really takes to start a small business and what makes a business successful," Cassius says. "I've also learned a lot about the lending and contracting fields, and about the different processes you have to go through to get a business started."

Intern Kia Frazier, who will graduates from Benedict in December with a degree in business management, was attracted to the SBA internship because she someday wants to start a business of her own. "I wanted to use my SBA internship to understand how businesses are run," she says. "I also wanted to see what the SBA offers small businesses."

Lately, Kia has been helping the Business Opportunity division organize a system to better organize the firms participating in the SBA's 8(a) Business Development Program.

"The interns are learning the ins and outs of small business right now," Gregg says. "But with the fresh perspective they bring, we're learning as much from them as they're learning from us."

The Tennessee District also presented a Government Contracting Workshop for Veterans on November 11 featuring presentations from the National Guard, Department of Veterans Affairs, General Services Administration and Army Corps of Engineers – Nashville District, an event that was promoted on local radio station WFSK-FM in Nashville.  As a part of Global Entrepreneurship week, the District will host Nashville lenders on November 18 so they may learn of how SBA's 90% loan guarantee for international trade loans may benefit their clients who are exporting Tennessee products around the globe.
